Questions to ask
Tick them off as you go. The best people to ask are current students, a professor in your major and the financial aid office.
Academics (ask a professor or admissions)
- How large are first-year classes in my likely major, and who teaches them?
- How easy is it to get into the classes I need to graduate in four years?
- What help is there with writing, math and tutoring, and how do students use it?
- Can undergraduates do research or internships, and how do they find them?
Cost and aid (ask financial aid)
- What did families at our income actually pay last year, after grants?
- Are your scholarships renewable every year, and what does it take to keep them?
- How much do housing, meals, books and fees add each year?
- What share of students graduate with debt, and how much?
Campus life (ask students)
- What do students do on weekends?
- How easy is it to find a group or club you fit into?
- Is housing guaranteed after the first year?
- What do you wish you had known before you came?
After college (ask career services)
- Where do graduates in my major work or study a year after graduating?
- How early do students start working with career services?
- Which employers recruit on campus?
